Historical Background

Haywood High School serves all of the ninth- through twelfth-grade students in Haywood County. Part of the Haywood County School System, Haywood High School offers a comprehensive curriculum, instructional support programs, and student personnel services including library/media, health, and guidance services.

The present campus opened in the fall of 1970 with one building. This original building with its open classroom design remains central to the campus and continues to house the principal’s office as well as the library, guidance office, little theater, gymnasium, cafeteria, and classrooms.

From 1970 until 1976, Haywood High School was for students in the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades – students who before 1970 went to either the old Haywood County High School or to Carver High School. During the early 1970s, ninth graders went to Haywood High, Junior Division, at the old Haywood County High School campus. This Carver High School campus was used for senior high vocational classes during this time. In 1976, when the new Haywood High Vocational-Technical Division opened, the ninth grade and the vocational education division were brought to the present campus.

Haywood High School is currently operating under the administration of  principal, Dr. Jerry Pyron.  Currently, the school has two assistant principals: Mr. Tim Seymour and Mrs. Paige Ferguson. Mrs. Pam Diebold is serving as the system’s Director of Career-Technical Education.

Facilities

Since the construction of the career-technical building in 1976, the campus has been enhanced with the addition of tennis courts, a baseball field, a football practice field, a walking track, a field house, computer labs, additional office space, a greenhouse, in 1997, a new classroom building. During the 2013-14 school year, the school was renovated extensively.
