HJH students serve on product-testing panel

Haywood County Schools’ nutrition program had the opportunity to conduct product testing with a select group of students, administrators and cafeteria staff from Haywood Junior High School on Thursday, October 20, 2011. The pre-approved items were presented by brokers from Asian Food Solutions and were rated on the basis of taste, texture and appeal. Food items met USDA’s nutritional requirements, were whole grain and also low in sodium.
The school nutrition program has been working with former President Clinton’s Alliance for a Healthier Generation to make Haywood County schools a healthier eating place. All food and non-food items are purchased through the school nutrition program’s competitive bid process.  All food items on school bid are pre-approved and then tested by students. Haywood County’s school nutrition program is part of a cooperative buying group that includes Lauderdale and Tipton County.
