“Read to be Ready” Director Krista Parker, pictured with Federal Programs Executive Director Gina Rawson (right), gave a presentation about the summer camp that had 84 campers improving their reading skills.

Haywood County School Board members met on July 11 for their monthly meeting. Among the items on the agenda was a celebration of the “Read to be Ready” summer camp, attended by 84 students from June 3-27. This is the third year for the camp, and according to Director Krista Parker, the campers really made great strides in improving their reading and writing skills. The $84,000 grant provided funds for 14 camp directors, books for the students and all the supplies. They also had 18 community partners.”

Other items on the agenda included a second reading and approval of Policies #6.300 – Code of Conduct, and #6.6.313 – Discipline Procedures. Superintendent Joey Hassell introduced 18 more policy additions and changes to board members. These are #1.406 – Minutes, #1.804 – Alcohol and Drugs in the Workplace, #2.403 – Surplus Property Sales, #2.601 – Fundraising Activities, #5.605 – Staff Gifts and Solicitations, #3.202 – Emergency Preparedness Plan, #4.605 – Graduation Requirements, #4.700 – Testing Programs, #4.700 – Testing Programs, #6.200 – Attendance, #6.308 – Bus Safety and Conduct, #6.506 – Students from Military Families (New Policy), #1.901 – Charter School Applications, #1.903 – Charter School Oversight, #1.905 – Charter School Renewal, #1.906 – Charter School Revocation; #5.200 – Separation Practices for Tenured Teachers, #5.201 – Separation Practices for Non-Tenured Teachers, and #5.305 – Family and Medical Leave.

Board members approved the proposed 2019-2020 yearly agenda for the monthly school board meetings and approved athletic practice for sports at Haywood High School during regular school hours. They also heard the Bullying Case Report, which is seven cases for the 2018-2019 school year, one less than the year before. The school system began keeping this report in 2013-14, and that year had 43 cases. Family and Student Services Executive Director Art Garrett reported that the number of these cases have decreased because of a better understanding by teachers and students of bullying.

Surplus items were approved for sale by board members, as was an updated Rental Agreement. Superintendent Hassell reminded everyone that HCS In-Service Week begins on July 29, and the first half-day for students is Friday, August 2.

The next meeting will be held on August 8 at 6 p.m.

A schools’ organization has named Haywood County School Superintendent Joey Hassell its Superintendent of the Year. The honor comes from the Southwest Superintendents Study Council. The Territory includes 20 school districts in 12 counties, including Shelby. The honor qualifies Hassell as a finalist for the statewide award. The honoree is named later this year.

In a text message to school board members, Hassell said, I am honored and humbled as well as thankful to be in Haywood County Schools with a supportive board and an amazing team of administrators, teachers, support staff, and, of course, students. Our Haywood County Tomcats and this community are special.”

Students at Haywood Elementary School had a great time at their 2019 Field Day held on Tuesday, May 14. They played games, sprayed each other with water, slid down the water slides and enjoyed lunch outside. Also celebrating that day were members of the school’s Lighthouse Team, and couldn’t help but notice the HUGE cabbage that are growing in the STEAM class’s greenhouse. Parent volunteers and volunteers from Wal-Mart helped with the occasion, organized by HES teachers Megan Mysinger, Holly Northcott and Sylvia Brown. Derrick Jackson was the grill master for the event.

Members of the Haywood County School Board met in regular session on Thursday, May 9, where Superintendent Joey Hassell praised the Haywood Middle School Tennis team for their performance this season and in District play. He praised other sports team at HMS and HHS. He also welcomed five members of the HHS Human Services class, under the direction of teacher Sarah Haynes. She reported that 39 students had the opportunity to partner with the 21st Century after school program with Work Based Learning.

Five members of the HHS Human Services class, under the direction of teacher Sarah Haynes, spoke at the board meeting about their experiences working in the elementary schools as mentors and tutors. Mrs. Haynes reported that 39 students had the opportunity to partner with the 21st Century after school program with Work Based Learning. Throughout the duration of the school year, my students worked in the elementary schools within our district to help tutor and mentor our youth. During these experiences, my students were able to gain a deeper understanding about the daily operations of a teacher and school staff members actually work. With our district being the second largest employer in the community and a large student interest due to this opportunity, HHS will be offering a new program of study next year called Teaching as a profession, and hopefully one day, these students will come back to our community and work with us,” said Mrs. Haynes. “These students also cumulatively earned 1,576 hours of community service between September and April while working with this program. The students shared with those attending the board meeting their personal experiences and what they were able to take away (from the experience) as a result.” Pictured are (from left) Jasmine Wellington, Jakia Williams, Victoria Dancy, TaNiyah Reid, Talaya Sabree and teacher Sarah Haynes.

Board members approved out-of-state travel for the HHS JROTC to attend JROTC summer came with Shelby County Schools at Camp McCain, Mississippi from Junes 16-22.

Superintendent Hassell also discussed the policy manual review. Policies recommended for change will be considered at the June 13 meeting. Among those to be considered will be the dress code and the discipline policies. Before the next meeting, these policies will be reviewed and revised for the board’s consideration.

In other business, board members approved the acceptance of the bid from Raptor for the Visitor Management System at all six locations. The cost for this system is $10,350. CFO Larry Livingston reported that the Catherine Truss Colhoun Trust has a balance of $196,502.96. The Trust’s committee reported that they have selected six scholarship recipients who will receive $2,000 each at the 2019 HHS Senior Awards ceremony Friday night.
