Top Ten

The following Distinguished Scholar students are the Top Ten in the Haywood High School Class of 2016. Tied in the #1 position with 4.0 GPAs are Valedictorians Audrey Davis, Kezira Horton, Haynes Kirby, Tina Phan, Anne Marie Sceals, Dylan Simmons, and Hannah Stanley. Earning the #8 position is Madison Ross, #9 Dustin Milton, and #10 is McKenzie Scott.

Joe T. Naylor Award – Dustin Milton also received the Joe T. Naylor Award for having an ACT composite score of 30. This award is given to the boy in the senior class with the highest ACT score.

Ed Thompson Award – Anne Marie Sceals and Audrey Davis received the Ed Thompson Award for having an ACT composite score of 30. This award is given to the girl(s) in the senior class with the highest ACT score.

Thirty-Plus Club Members – Three of our graduates have scored 30 or higher on the ACT and are members of the Thirty-Plus Club: Dustin Milton, Audrey Davis, and Anne Marie Sceals.

Outstanding Career-Technical Scholar Award – Anne Marie Sceals and Tyler Hall received the Outstanding Career-Technical Scholar Award.

DAR Good Citizenship Award – Audrey Davis received the DAR Good Citizenship Award.

Medical Office Assistant Certification – The following four students have completed the requirements for Medical Office Assistant Certification from Tennessee College of Applied Technology: Dymond Haley, Kezira Horton, Dajaria Rodrigus, and Alexandria Walker.

ACT National Career Readiness Certification – Eleven students have qualified for Career Readiness Certification. ACT certifies that these students have the foundational work skills needed for success in jobs across industries and occupations. These students are: Tyra Carney, LaPatra Carney, Kaitlyn Ellington, Teddy Fredrick, Tyler Hall, Katie Harston, Alecia Johnson, Zachary McFarland, Christian Sagahon, Jacob Siegler, and Christian Snipes.

The “Semper Fidelis” Award – DeRayiz Claybon is the recipient of the Semper Fidelis Award for musical excellence.

Recognition of Seniors Entering Military Service – $334,616

Joining the United States Army are Destin Jameson, Tradarious Woods, Victoria Ramirez, and James Snipes. Each will qualify for $72,404 in tuition aide. Joining the National Guard is Diamond West, who will qualify for up to $45,000 in tuition aide through the Guard.

Tennessee Scholars – The Tennessee Scholars program is a business-led initiative endorsed by the Tennessee Department of Education, the Tennessee Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Tennessee Business Roundtable, and many other education coalitions across the state. To become Tennessee Scholars, students must complete a rigorous academic and technical course of study that exceeds the minimum requirements for a diploma. Additionally, they must meet other criteria including at least 80 hours of community service. It speaks well of Haywood High School and of our senior class that 24 of our graduates meet all the requirements for Tennessee Scholar status, and that they collectively have performed more than 1,920 hours of community service during the past four years. REDI College Access Awards Total for 2 Years = $34,000

The Haywood County-City of Brownsville Scholarships in the amount of $500 each semester to these students to attend post-secondary institutions for the 2016-2017 academic year. These scholarships are renewable for the 2017-2018 term. Tennessee Promise Scholarships – The Tennessee Promise provides a last-dollar scholarship to all eligible Tennessee high school graduates, covers two years of tuition at Tennessee’s public community and technical colleges. Haywood High School has 141 students who qualified for these scholarships.

HOPE Scholarships — $248,000 for 1 year – $992,000 over 4 years

The State of Tennessee provides HOPE Scholarships for students who meet certain academic requirements and who will continue their education at a postsecondary school in Tennessee. Sixty-two seniors meet those academic criteria and are eligible for scholarships ranging from $2,000 to $5,500 per year, pending approval from the Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation. Other students may qualify as their application process is completed. Students who have an ACT score of 29 or higher and who have a grade-point average of 3.75 or higher qualify for the General Assembly Merit Scholarship in addition to the HOPE Scholarship. Two of our graduates – Dustin Milton and Anne Marie Sceals – meet these qualifications and will receive General Assembly Merit Scholarship, pending approval from the Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation.

At the end of the Awards ceremony, Haywood High School Principal Dr. Jerry Pyron spoke to the graduates, “If you keep your grades up and remain eligible to renew your college and lottery scholarships for four years, the Class of 2016 will leave here tonight with a combined total of $2,105,434 to help further their education over the next 4 years.”
