FFA students recognized

Members of the Haywood High School Future Farmers of America celebrated the end of the school year with a banquet on May 10 in the Career and Tech Commons at HHS. Students and their families were present to honor the graduating seniors, the students who participated and placed in competitions and the outgoing and incoming officers.

Conducting the ceremony were the 2015-16 Chapter Officers: President, Trevor Ferguson; Vice President, Robin Martin; Corresponding Secretary, Harley Whittiemore; Recording Secretary, Halie Steward; Treasurer, Matthew Waddell; Reporter, Haley Hendrix; and Sentinel, Elizabeth Porter.

Forty students were successful candidates for the Greenhand FFA Degree: Daisha Adams, Jakecia Adams, Christina Armes, Teveon Banks, Emanuel Beard, Bishop Bell, Dontious Bell, Timothy Bendall, Candace Berry, Christina Berry, Jarmarious Clark, Jacob Delaney, Zachary Esquivias, Riley Ferrell, Andrew Hodge, Brent Howell, Tyler Howell, Larry Johnson, Christian Jones, Karla Kennamer, Kaleb Kutz, Jonathan Lane, Briana Mann, Sidney Martin, Tracy Maxwell, Mark Medley, Zach Moore, Jadaya Parsons, Dennis Pruitt, Dedrick Pugh, Jamie Rodriguez, Zarquavious Rogers, Nathan Sanderlin, Dikota Shockey, William Sigler, Anthony Simpson, Baileigh Waldrop, Peyton Watson, Jerwin Young, and William Young. Receiving the Star Greenhand Award, which is given to a first-year FFA member who stands out among the rest, was Janie Rodriguez.

Twenty-one candidates met the challenge and met their goals to receive the chapter degree: Jackson Alford, Chris Conaster, Grace Glaser, Drayton Hawkin, Haley Hendrix, Robert Johnson, Selena Leal, Tyler Martin, Brent Moore, Enrique Ponce, Elizabeth Porter, Albert Richardson, Guillermo Rodriguez, Samantha Sanders, Hali Steward, Toniera Sweet, Abimael Vasquez, Will Voss, Matthew Waddell, Logan Wilburn, and Dylan Wilson. The Star Chapter Farmers of the year are Haley Hendrix and Elizabeth Porter.

Robin Martin received her State degree in March at the Tennessee FFA Convention in Gatlinburg.

Livestock Judging – Haley Hendrix, Jadaya Parsons, Elizabeth Porter, and Mikayla Hendrix placed fourth in the District.
Job Interview – Robin Martin placed second in the District
Dairy Judging – Harley Whittiemore, Claudia Price, Richard Martin, and Halie Hendrix placed second in the District.
Land Evaluation – FFA Team – Zach Tinsley, Matthew Waddell, Trevor Ferguson, and Tyler Martin placed second in the District and fourth in West Tennessee. 4-H Team – Hunter Waddell, Trenton Jolley, Mark Medly, and Trevon Banks.
Upper Skills – Halie Steward, Matthew Waddell, Hunter Waddell, Trevor Lott and Richard Martin placed third in the District and third in West Tennessee.
Lower Skills – Jamie Rodriguez, Karla Kennamer, Mark Medley, and Jonathan Lane placed 3rd in the District and ninth in West Tennessee.
Opening and Closing – Briana Mann, William Young, Jamie Rodriguez, Jadaya Parsons, Baileigh Waldrop, and Riley Ferrell placed second in District and 11th in West Tennessee.
Poultry Judging – Haley Hendrix, Mikayla Hendrix, Elizabeth Porter, and Selena Leal placed second in District.

Selected as the Most Improved Member was Mikayla Hendrix.

In closing, the advisors, Shelby Cross and John Joyner, announced the 2016-17 officers: President – Haley Hendrix; Vice Presidents – Trevor Ferguson, Elizabeth Porter, and Taylor Waddell; Secretaries – Harley Whittiemore and Mikayla Hendrix; Treasurer – Richard Martin; Reporter – Courtney Sheppard; Sentinel – Sidney Martin; and Historian – Logan Wilburn.
