Ninth Grade GEAR UP Students Tour Southwest Tennessee Community College
Ninth grade Haywood County GEAR UP students from Haywood High School had the opportunity to tour Southwest Tennessee Community College in Memphis on January 23. The group was made up of 101 students, along with parents, and district employee chaperones. Students were told about the types of academic majors offered at Southwest as they visited various buildings and classrooms on the campus. Students were particularly interested in answers they received to questions about class schedules, areas to live near the campus, dining options, and financial assistance. Students enjoyed their lunch provided by GEAR UP in the Southwest Café.
“College tours are an important part of the Haywood County GEAR UP program,” said Jackie Whitten, the Haywood County GEAR UP Site Coordinator. “We want to encourage students to participate in the college tours so the tours can give a first-hand look at life on a college campus.”
