From the Office of the Superintendent
Press Release
Friday, January 27, 2023
A note was discovered in the girls’ restroom near the Haywood High School Little Theater Friday, January 27, 2023 before 9:30 a.m. The note stated, “Be ready for Monday” among other threatening statements. The matter was investigated by school administrators and the Brownsville Police Department. Three female students have been charged with Level IV Physical Threats to Others and will face consequences as outlined in Haywood County Board of Education Policy.
This afternoon after dismissal, six or seven gunshots were fired on Penny Lane, behind the HHS campus. All students safely returned to the building and were safely released by HHS staff. Brownsville Police Department officers are currently investigating the incident on Penny Lane.
The shots fired today do not appear to be connected to Haywood High School; but in an abundance of caution, extra security measures will be in place at tonight’s Tomcat basketball game at HHS. Additionally, extra security measures will be in place at Haywood High School on Monday, January 30, 2023, including metal detectors, random backpack searches, and extra officers available. Haywood Middle School will conduct backpack searches. All other Haywood County Schools campuses will have additional security. All Haywood County Schools will be open Monday, January 30, 2023.
