Healthy Snowballs

Healthy Snowballs? At Haywood Elementary, students in the Save the Children Afterschool program participated in their monthly “Healthy Snack Lesson” provided by Coordinated School Health. This is a literacy-based nutrition education class where students read a story and make a healthy snack based on something in the story. They also read about the foods used to make the snack and the vitamins included, as well as what part of the body they benefit. This month, students read “Here Comes the SNOW!” by Angela Shelf Medearis. After the story, the students made snowballs out of granola, honey, and almond butter, then rolled them in shredded coconut and powdered sugar. They learned that almond butter has calcium, iron, and magnesium and that coconut has manganese, copper, phosphorus, potassium, iron, and zinc. Granola contains all those vitamins and minerals, plus vitamin E. What a fun way to get healthy!
