Ready to be Ready: HCS Spring Book Jam
By Yvette Blue
On April 13, 2017, Haywood County Schools sponsored a Spring Book Jam at the Brownsville Boys and Girls Club. In alignment with the school district’s reading initiative, HaywoodReads, the purpose of the Book Jam was to spread the message that not only is reading important in our daily lives, it is also FUN! The students of the Boys and Girls Club enjoyed listening to stories read by guest readers: Sonia Outlaw-Clark, Achana Jarrett, Coach Kendall Dancy, Coach Jarrod Kornegay, Coach DJ Delk, Coach Buffie Turner, and Coach Vernon Mann. Students received reading tattoos and stickers, ate popcorn and had their picture made with Stacmot (Tomcats mascot) and the Easter Bunny. Last, but not least, all students received a backpack filled with books! Parents also received reading material; their reading material was from Reading Rockets!! The information included tips on how to build comprehension skills at home and the importance of having children read at home each day.
