School board renews Superintendent contract

Several students from the Haywood Middle School band performed for everyone at the May School Board meeting. The HMS Warrior Band recently performed in the West Tennessee Strawberry Festival and won first place in the Middle School Division.  In addition to bringing home the first-place trophy, the band also won $150 for its program. The Band Director is Jason Spraggins, and serving as Parent Volunteer is Patricia Gaietto.

At the May Haywood County School Board meeting, board members approved a new contract with Superintendent Teresa Russell. She has accepted a four-year contract at $100,000 a year, giving her a $5,000 a year raise. But her contract does say that they can revisit her salary each year after her evaluation. The contract will commence on August 1, 2014, and end on July 31, 2018.

In other business, the board approved an out-of-state trip for HHS HOSA students to attend their national competition, and an out-of-state trip to Ole Miss for a football camp for the HHS football team. Nine students through GEAR UP also were approved to attend a Youth Summit in Nashville.

Board members approved the School Nutrition Program Community Eligibility Provision, and the newly revised Strategic Compensation Plan for Haywood County Schools Professionals. Check haywoodschools.com for a link to the complete plan.

Board members also agreed to purchase a new 2013 school bus for $77,000 from the lowest bidder, Mid-South Bus Center. They also agreed to sign a contract with Trane for the Chiller Service Agreement.

The next school board meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 10, at 6 p.m.
