The Haywood High School tennis teams had a great season this year. The Boys finished regular season play with a 9-2 record, tied for second in the south section of the District.The Girls team finished regular season play with a 9-2 record, in second place in the south section of the District.
The District tournament was held at UT Martin during the May 11 weekend. It included 11 schools, and 20 to 22 entries in each category:
In Girls Singles:
Both HHS singles players entered in the Girls tournament, and Mary C. Sharpe and Amy Davis made it to the District Championship match, earning all District honors. Mary C. Sharpe won the tournament, taking first place, and Amy Davis took second.  Reviewing HHS history back through the researchable past 30 years, no other occasion on the girls’ team has been found where both players entered in the District tournament made it all the way to the final. So this is a very rare occasion. Coach Mark Davis said, “This is every tennis coach’s dream to see both of your entries into a tournament playing for top honors. Our players on our girls and boys teams have played many great matches, and I’m very proud of each of them for their winning ways.”
Boys Singles:
Haywood High’s Kyle Sills was semi-finalist, All-District honors; and Ross Houghton, quarter-finalist.
At Regional:
At the region, Mary C. Sharpe defeats Camden player in semi-finals, then Amy Davis defeats Greenfield player in semi-finals. Again, two Haywood players advance to the final. Mary C. Sharpe defeats Amy Davis in the final, to go on to the State Tournament (only the Regional winners advance to State).
