So just what is Skype?  Skype is a software application that allows users to make voice and video calls and chats over the Internet. Calls to other users within the Skype service are free, while calls to both traditional landline telephones and mobile phones can be made for a fee using a debit-based user account system. Skype has also become popular for its additional features, which include instant messaging, file transfer, and videoconferencing. Today Skype has over 663 million registered users. At Haywood Junior High and other schools across the world, Skype is being used to bring new meaning to learning outside the classroom. Principal Blue challenged her teachers to complete at least two Skype sessions. All those who complete the challenge will receive $100 to be used to purchase additional instructional materials/equipment.

In August, Mrs. Denise Phillips, the 7th grade computer lab instructor, took on the challenge and Skyped with each one of her classes. Mr. Billy Rainey, a certified Microsoft systems engineer, who has over 15 years of experience in his field, answered students’ questions through Skype.  The purpose of the lesson was to discuss how math is used in different careers. After the Skype session was complete, students researched other careers and how they might use mathematics. In October, Mrs. Phillips and her classes had their second Skype experience with Eric Rank, general manager of Paradoxe Corporation in Jackson, Tennessee. Mr. Rank spoke briefly about his company, including designing and installing solar panels.  The students were allowed to ask questions concerning solar energy. Students followed up with research on types of alternative energy, including solar power.
