HES students learn about Thanksgiving
Mrs. Elizabeth Lovelace’s first-grade students learned all about the first Thanksgiving before going home for Thanksgiving break. Students worked really hard for over a week to put on a Thanksgiving play entitled “A Native American Welcome” which was videoed and added to their class website. Students made Native American and Pilgrim headpieces for the play and other activities.
After watching their video, students were able to participate in many activities. Students wrote about what they would have taken on the Mayflower if they had only one small box. They had to choose between needs and wants. The class talked about how it felt that first, harsh winter on the new land. Students made butter to show how Pilgrims had to
work for what they ate. They were able to put the butter on a cracker and eat it. Yum! That afternoon students made apple turkeys as they continued their conversation about the first Thanksgiving.
