HHS seniors receive awards

On Friday, May 18, Haywood High School held the Awards/Scholarship Program for the Class of 2018. The Top Ten was recognized, and students who received awards and scholarships were honored for their hard work and for their diligence to complete their high school work, preparing for post high school training or college. If the students keep their grades up and remain eligible to renew their college and lottery scholarships for four years, the Class of 2018 will receive a combined total of $1,534,218 to help further their education over the next 4 years.

Top Ten

Valedictorian – Adam Jollo received the Valedictorian Award for having the highest scholastic average in the Distinguished Scholars Program. Adam has maintained a GPA of 99.4545 during his four years in high school.

Salutatorian – Kaitlin Leath received the Salutatorian Award for having the second highest scholastic average in the Distinguished Scholar Program. Kaitlin has maintained a GPA of 98.8889 for her four years in high school.

 Joe T. Naylor Award – Brittain Adams will also receive the Joe T. Naylor Award for having an ACT composite score of 34. This award is given to the boy in the senior class with the highest ACT score.

Ed Thompson Award – Kaitlin Leath will receive the Ed Thompson Award for having an ACT composite score of 32. This award is given to the girl in the senior class with the highest ACT score.

Thirty-Plus Club Members – Four of our graduates have score 30 or higher on the ACT and are members of the Thirty-Plus Club: Kaitlin Leath, Mikala Leath, Brittain Adams, and Karoline Hobock.

Career-Technical Student of the Year Awards – Dominic Gaietto and Christian Jones will receive the Career-Technical Student of the Year Awards.

 DAR Good Citizenship Award – Elizabeth Haynes received the DAR Good Citizenship Award.

DAR Award for Outstanding Junior ROTC Cadet – Erin Adkerson, received the ROTC Cadet of the Year Award.

Perfect Attendance Award – Ciji Lovelace received an award for Perfect Attendance. Ciji has not missed a day of school since she started kindergarten.

ACE Award – The National Exchange Club sponsors the Accepting the Challenge of Excellence (ACE) Award which recognizes high school students who have had to overcome great physical, emotional, or social obstacles and who are now eligible for high school graduation. The ACE Award went to Landon Wilson.

Recognition of seniors entering Military Service. The following students plan to join the military after graduation:

  • Joining the United States Air Force are Jasmine Reece, Jalon Winters, Deshavette Manns, Albert Richardson, and Chris Kent.
  • Joining the Marines are Jordan Brinkley and Nathanael Melo.

Tennessee Scholars – The Tennessee Scholars program is a business-led initiative endorsed by the Tennessee Department of Education, the Tennessee Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Tennessee Business Roundtable, and many other education coalitions across the state. To become Tennessee Scholars, students must complete a rigorous academic and technical course of study that exceeds the minimum requirements for a diploma. Additionally, they must meet other criteria including at least 80 hours of community service. HOPE Scholarships – a possible $847,500 over 4 years

The State of Tennessee provides HOPE Scholarships for students who meet certain academic requirements and who will continue their education at a postsecondary school in Tennessee. The following 107 seniors meet those academic criteria and are eligible for scholarships ranging from $3,000 to $6,000 per year, pending approval from the Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation. Other students may qualify as their application process is completed.

Students who have an ACT score of 29 or higher and who have a grade-point average of 3.75 or higher qualify for the General Assembly Merit Scholarship in addition to the HOPE Scholarship. Three of our graduates – Kaitlin Leath, Mikala Leath, and Karoline Hobock – meet these qualifications and will receive General Assembly Merit Scholarship, pending approval from the Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation.
